Oda Nobuna no Yabou – Not Your Ordinary Harem Anime

If you are someone who is very familiar with the Sengoku Period, then this series called “Oda Nobuna no Yabou“ may not hold too much of a surprise to you as it mostly follows the life and times of Oda Nobunaga, a great warlord during those tumultuous periods. However, this series comes with a special twist; most of the generals and rulers are females, making it a great anime setting for harems to develop between them and the main character (Sagara Yoshiharu).

With the real Hideyoshi dead, the Main Character will need to replace him in history unless he wants history to fall apart. He then use his tact and wits from the game, Nobunaga’s Ambition, to win over the Oda’s retainers and help his lord, Nobuna.

At first sight this anime may seem dull and uninteresting with the historical talks but quickly escalates into a fan favorite with the impressive graphics and plot. This is because the first episode primarily introduces the various characters that are central to the plot. The plot may lack the meat behind it, however do not be fooled as it soon follows various important historical events like the Siege of Kanegasaki and more.

As I had said before, graphics are impressive with the vibrant colors and designs particularly popping out, suiting the dynamic setting of the anime. Clothes also gave off a unique feeling from them; allowing you to identify every character from the color of clothes they wear. Opening and Ending theme are well suited to the anime, with sequences well synchronized with the music. Voice acting is also top notch where voices aren’t too husky or too high pitched at all. When the character talks in serious situations, it does not seem that they are stiff or forced; commendable as some animes have stiff voice acting.

Story telling in this anime is another thing that I loved about. It may seem as a cliché harem story at the start, with all the beautiful women introduced. However, the story takes a turn when the history does not go as planned with the main character intervening at pivotal historic points, preventing some events from happening at all. It keeps the viewer guessing about what is going to happen next and how the eventual death of Oda Nobuna at Honnoji will play out. Will she die as planned in history? Or will she survive the assassination attempt and change history?

Personally, I enjoyed this anime very much as it will be placed in my top ten quite easily, breaking into the top five depending on how the rest of the episodes go. It does teach you about some Japanese history (even though it does deviate a little from actual history) and the main character is actually very funny where transitioning from serious to comedic moments is done properly by the editors and producers. Do not give up at the first episode which may seem boring but persist on, I am sure you will enjoy it as time and the episodes go on.
